The cover of Paul Griffith's extended essay of Alexander Goehr's Music. The book also contains the catalogue of the music manuscripts in the Alexander Goehr Archive as well as illustrations, music examples, and an introduction by Werner Gruenzweig. Included is a CD containing "Das Gesetz der Quadrille", Op. 41 and String Quartet No. 3, Op. 37.

Kurzbiografie/ Geschichte der Institution

geb. 10.8.1932 in Berlin. Aufgewachsen in England. Kompositionsstudien in Manchester, ab 1955 bei Olivier Messiaen in Paris. 1956 erste Aufführung bei den Darmstädter Ferienkursen, Uraufführung der Oper "Arden Must Die" 1967 an der Hamburger Staatsoper. Sein Werk umfaßt alle Genres von Instrumental- und Vokalmusik. Er wandte sich früh von strikter Serialität in der Musik ab, die er als Kult stilistischer Reinheit betrachtete. Goehr unterrichtete Musik auf vier Kontinenten und war von 1976 - 1999 Professor an der Universität von Cambridge. Goehr starb am 26.8.2024 in Cambridge.
